Labor day has come and gone, nights are getting chillier and kids are toting their new backpacks to school…fall has arrived!  While officially it is still summer until September 22nd, signs of the changing seasons are all around.  It’s a great time to enjoy the last degrees of warmth in the New England outdoors, as plants and animals (including us!) busily prepare for the upcoming winter.  Just remember to bring your sweater!

One of my favorite sounds of late summer and early fall is the evening chirping of crickets.  Their rasping noise is especially loud this time of year as male crickets attempt to find and attract mates.  His song is created by rubbing his wings together and is typically heard at night, since crickets are nocturnal.  And if you’re curious about the temperature of these ever cooler nights, you can use a cricket as a thermometer.  Simply count the number of chirps for 13 seconds (make sure you’re only listening to one cricket) then add 40 to get an approximate temperature reading.  You and your children can also search for crickets in grassy areas- you might even catch one if you’re quick!  This is also a great time of year to listen and watch for birds.  Birds are beginning to convene in preparation for their winter migration.  Take a trip to a pond (our favorites include Spy Pond, Hammond Pond and Crystal Lake) and watch the geese and ducks while they’re still here.

Here at PUDDLESTOMPERS, we are excited to begin exploring the wonders of fall with our classes and vacation programs!  Our classes run for 10 weeks and are a great way for you and your child to experience the changing seasons together while learning about open spaces in your community.  Registration is happening now.  We are also gearing up for our drop-off vacation programs, which run for 3 hours on Columbus Day and Veterans Day.  Each of these kids-only programs explores a different fall topic and is a fun way to spend a day off in the great outdoors!  We hope you’ll pull out those sweaters and jackets and join us for some good times outside!
