March 20th marks the first day of spring and with the beautiful weather we’ve enjoyed recently it certainly feels like winter has left us! Undoubtedly a cold spell will come through again before the season really warms up but the signs of spring are all around.
Spring brings energy back to nature. As plants emerge from their winter dormancy, so too do animals and insects, eager to feast on the new growth. Take time to notice the buds on trees and shrubs as they swell in the spring. Those buds contain all the leaves that will grow on the tree that year and have been present, however small, since the leaves dropped last fall. Many animals, such as the White-Tailed Deer, depend on these buds as food throughout the winter. Find a tree to observe over the season and watch as the buds give way to leaves and summer foliage.
The noises of spring are especially noticeable after months of quiet. Take a walk near a marsh or wetland and listen to the chorus of frogs (spring peepers, wood frogs), water flowing with spring melt and birds back from their migration (red-wing blackbirds, song sparrows and robins). Engage children in the difficult task of quiet listening by asking them to count all the sounds as they can hear. Older kids can try making a map or picture of the sounds they hear.
Enjoy searching for signs of spring and look forward to the warm days ahead!
